We have a long history of achieving favorable results for clients located throughout the Asia-Pacific region. 

Our roots in the region are in Japan, where we have decades of experience representing large companies and financial institutions. The firm maintains a presence in Tokyo that is supported by highly credentialed lawyers from all of our offices. 

Propelled by our reputation for providing the highest quality legal work, our practice has expanded well beyond Japan. We have represented clients located in numerous Asian-Pacific countries, and have forged close relationships with lawyers and law firms throughout the region.

We also pride ourselves on our ability to work with Asia-Pacific law firms on their most important US cases and transactions. Our Experience

China 

  • Chindex International, Inc.
    • We represented the Special Committee of Chindex International, Inc. in a going private acquisition by Shanghai’s Fosun Pharma, TPG and the CEO of Chindex. This deal was recognized by China Law & Practice and The American Lawyer as “among the most exciting and creative transactions in the past year” and named a 2015 “Private Equity Deal of the Year” finalist.
  • Xinhua Finance Media
    • We represented the principal selling shareholder in the initial public offering of Chinese media company Xinhua Finance Media. 


India 

  • Cipla Ltd. 
    • We represented India-based drugmaker Cipla in its acquisition of two US generic drug companies InvaGen Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Exelan Pharmaceuticals Inc. The deal, one of the biggest overseas buys by an Indian drugmaker helped Cipla gain a foothold in the US market. 
  • Wipro Limited
    • We represented Wipro Limited, a global information technology, consulting and outsourcing company based in India in several acquisitions, including its acquisition of Science Application International Corporation's global oil and gas information technology business. 


Japan 

  • Taisei
    • Our team advised Taisei on its first investment in U.S. commercial real estate and a number of subsequent similar investments in various U.S. cities.
  • TEPCO
    • We led Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) to success in a uranium supply contract dispute when a tribunal of international arbitrators rejected the bulk of a $700 million claim brought by Canada’s largest uranium mining company
  • Polyplastics Co., Ltd.
    • We represented Polyplastics, a global manufacturer of engineering plastics and polymers, in a $1.6 billion transaction that saw one of its joint venture partners buy out the other joint venture partner. The deal required the restructuring of various agreements and the drafting of complex cross-licensing agreements for intellectual property
  • Pharmaceutical Defense
    • We are currently coordinating the defense of a global pharmaceutical company in product liability litigation throughout Japan. The cases involve one of the company’s top selling products.
  • Automotive Parts Manufacturer
    • We helped a Japanese auto parts company successfully pursue claims arising out of a worldwide recall of auto parts that it purchased from a Tier 2 supplier. We brought litigation in the United States against the Tier 2 supplier and advised our client on global claims exceeding $350 million.
  • Sojitz Aerospace Corp.
    • We won a sweeping victory for Sojitz’s New York subsidiary in a complex arbitration brought by Goodrich Corporation. The arbitration panel rejected all of Goodrich’s claims, granted Sojitz’s counterclaims and awarded Sojitz the cost and expenses of the arbitration. 
  • Marubeni Corp.
    • In what was regarded as one of the largest FCPA enforcement actions in US history, we successfully resolved bribery charges for our client, Marubeni Corp. 
  • Nikon Inc.
    • Among other matters, we obtained extremely favorable results for Nikon in the bankruptcy cases of Circuit City, Penn Camera, and Ritz Camera. 
  • Isetan Company Limited.  
    • We successfully steered Isetan through the high-profile chapter 11 restructuring of Barneys New York, as well as related litigation and arbitration. We obtained a multimillion dollar judgment against the individual owners of Barneys and achieved a result for Isetan that was widely hailed as a major victory. 
  • Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.
    • We represented this Japanese pharmaceutical company in a complex multibillion dollar transaction involving the US law aspects of its sale of a 50.1% interest to F. Hoffman-La Roche Ltd. and the spin-off to the shareholders of its US subsidiary.


Korea

  • LG Electronics
    • We represented LG Electronics in patent infringement claims relating to semiconductor and thin film LCD displays and in product liability matters and consumer class actions involving handsets and batteries for hand-held cellular telephones. 
  • Coupang
    • We represented the largest Korean e-commerce website, Coupang, and its founder, Bom Kim, in numerous rounds of venture capital financing.


Philippines 

  • Philippine Airlines, Inc.
    • We represented Philippine Airlines, Inc. in a $9.5 billion order for 65 aircraft in what is the largest aviation purchase in Philippines history. 
  • Fortune Tobacco Corporation
    • We represented Fortune Tobacco Corporation, the largest tobacco business in the Philippines in creating a joint venture with Philip Morris International to manufacture, procure and distribute tobacco products in the Philippines. 


Singapore 

  • Grab (formerly known as Grab Taxi)
    • Representation of Grab Holdings Inc., Southeast Asia’s leading super app, in its merger with SPAC Altimeter Growth Corp., a transaction that took Grab public in the largest SPAC merger ever ascribing to Grab a pro-forma equity value of approximately $39.6 billion 
    • Representation of Grab Financial Group, Southeast Asia’s leading fintech platform, in raising over $300 million in a Series A funding round, led by South Korea’s Hanwha Asset Management Co. Ltd.
    • Representation of Grab, Inc. in its acquisition of Uber Technologies Inc.’s Southeast Asia business and in its series F, G, H and I convertible preferred stock financings involving aggregate proceeds in excess of $8 billion and numerous strategic partnerships, including with Microsoft, MUFG, Toyota, Mastercard and Bookings
